Organizational Spotlight: The Global Soap Project

These days, there are so many initiatives that are aiming to help boost hygiene practices around the world. One particularly admirable effort is the Global Soap Project. Started up by Derreck Kayongo, the Global Soap Project collects semi-used soaps left over by guests in hotels, grinds them up and sanitizes them, and then forms them into new bars to be shipped out and distributed to underdeveloped countries free of charge.
So far, the soap has been shipped to locations such as Haiti and Kenya. The initiative is also helping hotel chains to “go green” since they are no longer filling up landfills with partially used soap. The Global Soap Project hopes to help cut back disease in developing countries with its efforts. The problem is not that these countries do not have soap, but rather that its people are so impoverished that they often have to choose between purchasing soap and other things vital to survival, like food. Kayongo hopes to even further expand upon the project to increase hygiene around the world. Way to “spread the word not the germs,” Derreck says Dr.Will Sawyer!
